And that is the week-plus that was…
I Thank You, Michael Jackson
I thank you, Michael Jackson! If it wasn’t for your untimely death we here in America and many other places around the world would have had to…
· Pay attention to the fact that the unemployment rate has gone up again to over 9% (and if we really wanted to pay attention we would have to realize that that 9% figure from the government is actually 16% in the real world.)
· Listen to Sarah Palin’s rambling, nonsequitur announcement that she is stepping down from the Alaska Governorship. (She must have the same disease as Gov. Mark Sanford who turned a two line announcement that he cheated on his wife with a woman in Argentina into a 20 minute ramble on the wonders of the Appalachian Trail.)
· Watch a week of reruns, failed shows, or another pledge drive on PBS.
· Live in a world (and State in the case of California) devastated by 30 years of Reagonomics as the economy continues its toilet-flush spin and the G.No.P. espouses their hypocritical ways.
· Watch as the Big Pharma and Insurance Industries spend your premiums on thousands of lobbyists that have flooded Washington D.C. in order to defeat anything in the way of health care reform that would actually benefit the populace.
· Care about the fact that Iran held a truly American-style election – corrupt and stolen.
· Think about the 30 or so soldiers and hundreds of civilians killed in Iraq and Afghanistan recently.
· Worry about getting my honey-do list completed…”Sorry, dear, I am in such mourning over Michael, I can’t work.”
So, yes, I thank you, Michael; and when the media attention goes on to the next news cycle, I will miss you and grieve for those wonderful days you helped me escape from the real world!
